Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is the most common diluent and solvent in modern perfumery. It is sometimes used to pad out a formula (to bring the total to 1.000 for parity) and can offer some minor benefits as a fixative, but a clever combination of musks is often a better option for this purpose.
DPG is almost odourless; it generally has a very faint, alcohol-like smell which only some people can perceive. But unlike alcohol, it is non-flammable, having a closed-cap flash point of 138°C (280°F). It has a higher viscosity than water.
